Porte Cable 7336 Sander

While sanding my topsides today, I noticed the sander seemed different suddenly. Then it started gouging the gelcoat. Found the bearings that the pad rotates on have already set up. I'm not even done sanding my first boat! I took the bearings out and found one bearing locked up with sanding dust. I ...

Thanks for your help everyone. Two things helped out here. First, learning to flow the varnish on instead of painting it on. A lot less brush strokes and more just pushing the varnish along, sort of. Second, a little Xylene helps out tremendously. I still have brush marks but you have to look real h...

More VArnish Problems but with Satin this time

I am having trouble getting even the most basic finish with Satin Varnish. I've tried Interlux Goldspar Satin and Epifanes satin. Both products leave brush marks. I don't mean a little brush marks; it looks like I applied it with a hairbrush or a rake. Tipping it off, even after 1 minute leaves the ...

Some Basic Fiberglass questions

I have a question or two with regards to fiberglass repair. When repairing a hole in the laminate, after the area has been correctly beveled and prepared, fiberglass pieces are cut to fill the area. Each piece is a little larger to fill the tapered void. Jamestown Distributors has a video on You Tub...

Wicked weather. I flew into Bangor on Monday. Couldn't believe the flight wasn't cancelled. Plane was sure rocking and rolling. Looks like the Bayou up here in some places. Lots of standing water. With regards to what Hirilond? said, I would varnish the teak plywood with a few coats first. This helps with the tearout of the grain. It also helps as you level the holly down to the teak surface. I plane the insert wood very close so there is very little to remove. Then I use the cabinet scraper....

Why Not Gelcoat?

I?m wondering what the reasons are for not replacing the gelcoat on the topsides as opposed to painting. It seems to me the prep time and labor is the same. The materials are not that much different in overall cost. If you have a boat that was damaged, the repairs are done with gelcoat, if it is a n...

One thing that Forespar doesn't say about their seacocks is that they can be through-bolted if you want to, but they don't mention that until you get the instructions. I know Tim firmly believes in through-bolting and that is why I specifically asked about that before purchasing them. I was afraid o...

On my boat, I have re-installed the saildrive engine. I was not planning on installing a starting battery, it's only 15hp. The more I think about it, the better things would be with one. Re: Retrofit Thermostatic mixer for Hot Water tank

We use a lot of these on industrial machines. You can get them in any material and temperature rating.
They are not cheap but I've only seen one fail in many years of using many of them.
http://www.amot.com/us/products/thermo.asp

We call them Amot valves.
