The lazy guide to boat renovation
Figure somebody buys an old boat. Everything works, but everything on the boat could use some attention. Where do you begin? They can't do it all at once. Instead, they can only devote 4-6 weekends a year to boat work, part of which is eaten up by ordinary yearly maintenance. They're not crossing Oc...

Our Hero
Albert Einstein loved to sail. He was a bit absent minded, and required rescue from time to time.
He called one of his boats "Tinef" which is Yiddish for "junk."

The sidedeck drains on the Pearson Ariel and Commander are routed directly overboard. No seacock or anything, just a formed tube leading to a hole. I think its fine since these drains are just for getting rid of standing water on deck You can see part of one to the left in this picture http://pearso...

Anybody hear about this guy "Pops"?
Claims to have bought a Triton new in 1966, circumnavigated, ran drugs and guns, etc., etc., etc.

That part has always troubled me. I thought you paid insurance to protect you from your stupidity. Your car insurance will cover you if you get in an accident because your tires were bald or your brakes were bad. Naturally, I don't appreciate the fact that insurance premiums are higher because many ...

Overlapping Fiberglass
There seems to be two different techniques for laying up fiberglass for tabbing, etc. One is to start with a narrow width and overlap with larger ones. For example, 3" tape, then 6" then 8" That's what I've always done. Seems like it would give a more redundant attachment. The other m...

I may be talking heresy, but there are few things more expensive than a free boat.

I like the Meridian, my friend has one.
But if you're looking for something of that size, check out this much-loved Ariel in Maryland. Asking $ 6500. Save you a year or two of work.

This discussion is really helping. Confidence grows. When I was researching the project, I decided not to use the Awlgrip products because I (mistakenly) thought Awlgrip had to be sprayed. Looking good. What an animal that guy was hammering at the mast trying to get the casting off. But, after spending six hours trying to break out that fused casting on my boat (without breaking it) I can understand the frustration. About sanding the mast with 36 grit---am I just trying to give the ma...

I found that this place had good prices on Interlux paint.
You do have to factor in shipping. Getting harder to find places with free shipping.
I'll be trying the new Interlux "Perfection"

I bought two triple deck organizers from Garhauer. Nice equiptment at a good price. I was going to buy their rope clutches, but I thought they were....well...ugly. Grinding off that old paint is a horrible job. Some random observations: I wish I had spent more time filling and fairing. You can use almost any kind of household paint on the interior. But, after all that work, boat paint might last longer. I used Interlux Primer and Brightsides, since I already h...

I've used Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (cold weather formula) as a base coating under varnish. You don't need much.
The wood should be in good condition since the product will darken imperfections in the wood.

Any way you can gasket the edges of the hatch and bearing surface? Can you get rubber or plastic to firmly adhere to the plywood? You might need some flush mount hatch locks to keep the hatches secure, which may also help squeeze things together. Maybe just a tiny half-round scupper underneath the j...

I don't use chemical strippers anymore either. I had tried a few different brands over the years. All of them required multiple applications and still didn't take everything off. They don't save you any time or effort. I also worried about adhesion problems. Sanding is the most effective method. But...
