Thanks again Mainsail, great stuff as always. I checked your "Musings" link, and landed directly, and most timely, on a great battery switch discussion. Great timing, as I'm in the middle of swapping out the old Delco alternator on my Perkins 4-108 for a 120 amp Balmar (via the TAD serpent...

Will Perfection Plus varnish stick to epoxy base?
I know traditional oil based varnishes stick to an epoxy base (West 105/207). 207 is the special clear hardener with UV blockers used as base coats for varnish. Done right, these varnish finishes look really great. How about a two part polyurethane varnish, like Interlux Perfection Plus? Will it als...

It turns out that a local buddy of mine knows the boat - she's an owner finished Dreadnought 32. The owner finished her with the small house, giving her a very different look from other Dreadnoughts.

I've installed a bunch of Apollo ball valve seacocks over the years - just put a new 1-1/2" in my boat last week. 1) Yes, they're stiff as a bugger when new, nearly impossible to flip the handle if the valve is not bolted down. Once installed, they are slightly easier to operate. 2) I put a lit...

Hi John, I watched that video and it's the complete opposite of how I've patched holes for years! Thanks Carl. Yes, I can get to the inside of the hole - it's under the settee, with good access. I measured the hull thickness to about 7/16". I have it ground back to about a 12" diameter. I hear biaxial should lay up at about 0.040" per layer, so I'm guessing 10 or 11 layers will ge...

One other question:
If I layer up the patch, then place it into the ground/beveled hole as in the Jamestown video, how do I know how many layers to use? How do I get the thickness right before putting it into the beveled hole?
Any ideas?

That does make sense - all the surface area of the large patch grabbing the hull, rather than all the little edges of all the patches.
