Re: Rudder shaft log repair question
That's what I originally thought so I replaced the hose and packing last season and it still leaked. On closer inspection I found it was leaking from a crack in the foberglass. Thanks for the tip on not using the 5200, I'll just glass it and then just use a little extra for increased strength. Dave

Rudder shaft log repair question
So we have a leak in our rudder rudder shaft log on our 1968 Bristol 29. It's basically just weaping, but it looks like a crack has developed around the base where it attaches to the hull. Whats the best way to repair this? I do not want to remove the rudder. My plan is to clean it all up, spread on...

Re: Engine problem
I can understand why when you ran out of fuel that the engine didn't start and that was because you sucked air into the system. When switching over fuel tanks the lifting pump should of cleared the lines, but this might take a couple of minutes. The other area I would also check is the exhaust. If y...

Re: drilling holes in the mast
I don't think you'll have any problems with mounting a winch in that location. If it's a concern drop or raise the location six inches or so. You could through bolt it, but then you have to put six more holes on the opposit side and if over tighted you could damage the mast.

Re: New-to-me B29
Great yacht you have there! We have a 1968 B29 hull number #85 and sail out of Gloucester Ma. I really like your toe rails! Ours are the original teak and we developed a leak last summer. Realistically they need to be replaced due to years of sanding and refinishing. When we bought our B29 the engin...

Re: Water Inlet Through Hull
When we installed our new diesel in our boat we were told not to go with an exterior strainer for the water intake for the engine. There were several reasons for this. One was because you can't clean it without taking it apart and doing that in the water just won't work. The second reason is that yo...

I would like to add an auto pilot next season and potentially radar a couple of years down the road. The breaker pannel I have is original and I have no open breakers to add any new equipment. I'm wondering if I should just replace the old pannel or add a second one. My fear is that I get into this ...

Re: Bristol 29 mast step rebuild help needed
If you repost this as a new question you'll get alot more responses back. When you get the boat home I would have the mast unstepped for for the ease of winter storage and then you can seal up the leak. Ours didn't leak on our b29 but there also wasn't any caulking around the areas where the wires w...

Re: Perkins 4-108 starting issue
Agree that it's most likely the temp, but you could also consider the age of the fuel. If you do need a little bit of a kicker on really cold starts, use wd40 in the air intake. It's not as explosive and will fire a diesel up safely.

Re: Engine mounts - replace how often
I ran into this problem when we replaced our A4 with a diesel. I didn't realize that the beds needs to be replaced until I started the new engine and got her in the water. Diesels have enough torque and vibration to torque itself out of alignment under load on the orignals A4 engine beds. So the nex...

Rudder head replacement question for a bristol 29
Ok, here is another project that I need to do, but have a problem with. The rudder head needs to be replaced. The problem is that when I took it apart and off the shaft I realized why there is a bolt going through the middle of it. The key was not cut on the center line of the shaft so they drilled ...

Re: Need sugestions on building a bow sprit for a Bristol29
Now looking at the damage that Tim had I have concerns. We also have to keep our boat in open water and it does get very rough in there. Our problems is that we're about a good hour away from the boat and it's not practical for us to drive there if we're going to get a storm to remove the anchor. I'...

Re: Need sugestions on building a bow sprit for a Bristol29
Thanks for the tips. Tim's set up is exactly what I'm looking for. I have to get some measurements and see about removing the existing hardware thats up there, but that shouldn't be that bad of a project. It will give me something to do over the winter time.

I would like to build a bow sprit for my bristol 29. If someone has done this project on a simular boat I would be intersted in how you did it. Radar power use question
We have a 29' sailboat and I'm starting to look into radar setups. I have never used one before so this is completely new to me. One of my concerns with a radar set up is the power useage. Most of the ones I am reading about are 4kw radars. I'm assuming that the 4kw output is a burst power output an...

We use the same company every year to haul our boat. Jocylins is located in Newburyport Ma and do go over state lines for transport. Prices are also very reasonable. Thanks,

That would make sense that there isn't any balsa coring under the mast step. What it looks like to me is the forward section of the mast step is compressing. If I look at the contour of the deck you can visually see it compressing. The rigging is slightly tighter then last year, but that is because ...
