Too Many Boats
Just pulled my Privateer 26 schooner out of the lake. I also own a Bristol 24, and a Bristol19. My boats are costing me too much in dock fees and storage. Time to turn loose of 1 or 2 of them. I plan on trailer sailing the Bristol 19 next year. That should stop the bleeding at the tune of almost $20...

Re: Filling the prop shaft hole
If the packing gland and cutlass bearing are still there; I would just stick the shaft back in place and tighten the packing up until it doesn't leak. a shaft collar on each end would prevent the shaft from moving. You never know what may happen down the road, and keeping the option for an inboard i...

Re: Mast from one boat to another. Caliber to Dufour
Sounds like you are close enough to use the mast and rigging as is. I don't think the extra 6" beam will be a problem with the spreader width. Most spreaders could be a little wider for best shroud angle anyway. The shrouds should probably be close enough depending on the chainplate location. T...

Really, I just wanted to be the first to post in 2013. It's beginning to look like the Mayans were wrong, and we will need to make plans for the future. My schooner, "Thursdays' Child" is still in the water at Carlyle lake in southern Illinois. I'm planning to finish the interior and wire ...

I start with the large patch first, and then smaller and smaller. That way, you get full contact on the hull with the first patch. The rest of the patches will stick better to the other patches than they would to the edge of the hole. I sometimes let the finished patch come out slightly below level,...

I rode out a tornado on 2, 14 lb danforth anchors with 6' of 1/4" chain and 1/2" nylon rode. I was in a Cheoy Lee 31 ketch, anchored fore and aft in a river. The boat was knocked down to the spreaders twice, but the anchors held, and although the rode was stretched like a banjo string, it ...

Here is a short video of "Thursdays" Child sailing a few days ago. She really feels like a much larger boat. I think the shorter, solid wood masts have a lot to do with the smooth motion.

Privateer 26 schooner project
For the past year, I have been turning a Privateer 26 hull into a schooner. I made a plan by combining a line drawing of the hull with a scaled down sailplan from a full size fishing schooner. I started with a basket case sloop, that would have been a really tough rehab. I removed the diesel, most o...

That's right. You can adjust luff tension with the boom down haul. I usually loosen mine when I raise the mainsail. I haul the main up to the proper height, and then set the luff tension with the downhaul. I will sometimes loosen it on downwind runs or light air.

When the Gorilla glue reacts with the moisture in the damp core, it turns to a similar foam as used for insulation. It sticks well to wet surfaces. The Gorilla glue seems to bond well with about everything. I know it took a week to wear off of my fingers. I guess I really won't know for sure until I do a regular recore and cut it open. Yes, I know; there is only 1 right way to fix a soft deck. Well, I would rather sail than do fiberglass work during the good weather.
