Re: Mystery Cutter (CAUTION: VERY SALTY)
My guess is a Colin Archer Redingskote/ Atkin hull. Forerunner of Crealock's Westsail 32.

Re: Triton Structural Question
Yeah Steve, it sounds like it is going to be plenty strong. But if you get a chance, please post some pictures especially of the chainplate reinforcement at the main bulkhead (for the uppers). I still don't have a clear picture of what I want there, because I don't want to compromise the integrity of...

Re: Triton Structural Question
Externals are on my to do list also. I know the boat has done fine without forward lowers for 40 years, but I can see that mast pumping in a stiff wind. That is definitely a lateral stiffener. Considering that those lateral stiffeners are so small, and the Triton hull is so thick, They are probably ...

Re: Removing a wheel and reinstalling a tiller
The tiller head does not bolt to the shaft.
You need to buy a bronze keyway.
The tillerhead has a pinch bolt, slide the head over the shaft and keyway and tighten the pinch bolt- that's it.

Re: Strap Location for Haul Out
When we launched HOKAHEY in the spring. The straps were tied 6' 8" apart and it picked beautifully. The aft strap was just aft of the lead. This is still a very strong point for lifting, and you can block just forward of it on the lead. This puts the aft strap at the aft big portlight, and the ...

Re: Triton Weight
Today we pulled HOKAHEY out of the water. The trailer was weighed empty at 2100 lbs. at Consumers' Fuel in Belfast, Maine. Boat and trailer weighed 10350 lbs., for a boat weight of 8250 lbs. We had a small amount of cruising gear aboard, fuel, but no water. HOKAHEY is hull # 656, built in RI in 1966...

Re: Bedding stanchions
I am in the process of rebedding everything on HOKAHEY with butyl tape. For backing plates the best material are the shims used in heavy construction to shim up precast concrete. They are plastic/ nylon and come in thicknesses up to 3/4". They are easily machined and cut and are indestructible....

Re: Tips in sanding polyester resin/ paper gumming up
A product called "Bottom Prep" is used to remove the wax from finishing resin. Sanding just spreads it around and interferes with the topcoat bond.

I second Le Tonkinois, it is easy to use and is all natural. I love the color of the finish. Do the research before you buy, it is expensive.

Re: Cleaning Bronze Jib Hanks
I've used muriatic acid to clean hanks, but they were off the sails. After they need to be rinsed in a baking soda solution to neutralize the acid and then rinsed thoroughly with water. You must use eye and skin protection, and be in a well ventilated area!!! It is a worthwhile skill to know how to ...

My first attempt to post a picture. Here is a power boat in Belfast harbor that lived up to it's name. It sat on a mooring, neglected for several years until she broke loose in a storm.

In Portsmouth NH there is a submarine floating in a pond just off the interstate. As I recall it is a self -guided tour for a donation. In Bath visit Maine Maritime Museum just south of Bath Iron Works shipyard. In Searsport there is Penobscot Marine Museum. And visit Captain Tinkhams Emporium nextd...

656 does not have the vinyl cord there, but a thin teak molding, which looks nice. I have used that cord at new shelves and I found it at a hardware store sold as AC weatherstripping (white only). Sailrite also sells a similar product (black or white ) #102187, #102188 on P. 152 of their catalog. Ha...

Glueing wood to formica
I am installing solid wood paneling in my Triton.I've taken everything removable into the shop, stripped off the formica and glued on the wood. now I've come to the forward bulkhead and am wondering if there is an alternative. I know I can get the formica off, even though the bond is still tight, but ...

Zach,I'm in the process of cutting 1/4" strips 4" wide out of african mahogany. My bandsaw is an inexpensive 10" Craftsman with a 5/8 hp motor. . It's essential that the boards face is planed flat, the saw is dialed in really well and the blade is in good shape. I use a long 4X4 for t...
