sail_fix.. actually, by all means.. I'd love to know and file away as a "useless info for future reference" trivia tidbit :)

Re: Barient-20 ST Winch Maintenance question..

This is just a guess from me, but I'd predict that those four spring loaded screws are holding on the self-tailing jaws, and they're spring loaded so that the jaws can spread to tightly hold different rope sizes. I doubt that I would bother touching them if they were on my boat, unless there seemed...

Barient-20 ST Winch Maintenance question..

I posted this on another site and didn't get much help, then realized that I would've done better to post it here where there's more of a focus on older equipment.. --- So one of the things I need to address this winter is maintenance for my winches.. So off they come. I have two Barient 20's, and a...

Re: Replacing entire hatchboard system..

"Only a_________s(5 missing letters) and admirals" stand in the companionway. I had a friend aboard about 20 years ago who said that to me, as I stood in my own companionway. Sheesh! But even I don't stand there anymore. Did he ever step foot aboard your boat or go sailing with you again?...

Re: Replacing entire hatchboard system..

I can't really extend the sill astern thanks to the traveller on the bridgedeck, but I was thinking of extending it inwards into the cabin and making it part the top step. On a slightly-less-than-24 ft boat though that 1/2-3/4 ft really cuts into valuable internal real estate.. although it's the per...

Re: Replacing entire hatchboard system..

That was my first reaction when I saw them too.. Got the previous owner to thank for that. And the fact that he made them out of some soft wood (pine i think) or other that inflates like crazy when it's humid/wet out (you can see the frame starting to split from the expansion on the starboard side)....

Re: Replacing entire hatchboard system..

Ask and ye shall receive Rachel.. This is the only shot of the companionway I've got.. http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz287/tintedchrome/Boat/companionway.jpg Essentially, the cabin coamings are flat. There's no built-in recess or channel or anything, that's entirely done by the framing. The fra...

Re: Replacing entire hatchboard system..

Thanks for the input - the whole counter-sink issue was where I started thinking of 5200. Good to know it won't hold up. While I won't be taking this bad boy out across the pond (sure, it's billed as an offshore racer, but not *that* far offshore..), the lakes aren't going to be its only cruising gr...

Replacing entire hatchboard system..

So the hatch board frames on my boat are shot. The framing is made out of wood and when the previous owner redid the hatch boards they expanded and split the frames apart. It's still holding together, but one of the winter projects this year is to redo them. I was thinking of redoing them using a 1/...

Re: Outlet Port to Nowhere

Hmm.. it wouldn't be a vent hose for an old/original holding tank would it? In a previous life, mine was originally installed in the anchor locker space and i have the exact same hose in mine. Personally, I'm going to be fiberglassing/filling/fairing mine. I don't want any plugs to potentially fail,...

Re: NEW SPREADER’S

Beautiful job! I'm going to measure up my old spreaders when I get home - I may very well have a use for your old ones if mine are under 28" (which in my hind-sight guesstimation they are.. I'll have to measure when I get home) What kind of condition is the standing rigging from the Vega setup,...

Cracks in spreaders

So now that I've got my bulkhead plan-of-attack in place for when I do them in October, it's time to tackle the projects I've taken home to work on.. One that I hadn't anticipated was my spreaders. Here's a lovely pic of one taunting me with it's gaping mouth.. The other one is cracked in the same s...

Re: Cabintop surgery

A guy did something similar (installing smaller ports into a larger opening) for his boat and documented it..

Not sure if that helps or not, but it's always nice to see how people attack a given problem..

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

Good to know Case! I took a closer look last weekend when I was at the boat, and sure enough there's no dimples, hard spots, oil-canning or anything else on the hull that suggests it's deformed in any way at this point. Yay! So now I'm just waiting for the boat moved much closer to home in October b...

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

Shark - thanks for the info - I'd found that site already but it's remarkably light on info considering its popularity down in NZ. Now that I've got a plan of attack for the bulkheads, I want to run my hull-support idea by you guys.. Given the relatively small size of the boat (24ftx8ft beam), will ...

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

Tim: Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with wood, and after all this work I guarantee I'll be maintaining this boat meticulously. But after the anticipated cursing, cuts, bruises, frustration, and resulting anger-management therapy I was thinking that a more rot resistant material might make me ...

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

I somehow missed the comment about using G10 as a bulkhead. That's really HEAVY and costly. Wood is a great material, you just need to seal the holes in the deck to prevent the wood rotting away. By the way, if the bulkheads are rotten, then the core in the deck penetrations (chainplates, stanchion...

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

Perhaps the boat was assembled from bow to stern, trapping earlier parts with later parts. Not a helpful way for later repair work! (Our LeComte was done pretty much the same way; I had to demolish/modify casework components in such a way that reassembling them was possible.) I'd go fairly far (Far...

Re: Advice on bulkhead replacement?

Thanks Case.. The bulkheads are tabbed to the hull, and bolted to the liner. Probably because the chainplates attach to the bulkheads, not the hull. My thoughts of having to cut out the liner stem from the realization that I'm going to have to clean up those edges and re-tab the new bulkheads. Here'...

'76 Northstar Farr 727

Well, here's a pic of my new (to me) boat - a Hughes Northstar Farr 727. The guy I bought it from initially thought this was a Hughes 22, which is another boat altogether. Imagine my surprise when I get to the yard and realize I'm looking at a 1/4 tonner with a rich offshore racing history.. $750 (o...

Advice on bulkhead replacement?

I posted this on another site and got a few good answers, but with the wealth of knowledge here prompted me to copy the thread here and ask for your input.. So both bulkheads on my Northstar Farr 727 need replacing and I have a couple of questions. The boat has a fiberglass inner liner on both sides...
