Re: Plastic knot meter thru hulls
One could consider removing the fitting(s) entirely and using a GPS for true speed over ground. Now one need only concern over extra batteries instead of holes in the hull. The less holes in ones hull, the better. Sailor Simon

Flaky peeling paint
The boat is a P.Rhodes Swiftsure 33. To preface, I know I've read about this exact problem sometime before, perhaps in this forum... The insides of the boat are painted with, what appears to be a whitewash type feel/flaky texture paint. Occassionally I'll see a bit as I'm poking around with my repai...

Re: NASA Photo of Bahamas Tidal Flats and Channels
Hi Duncan, amazing photo's. I've always stated I wouldn't go south, until several guys in the marina insisted I had the perfect boat for this type of sailing. A 33'centreboard sloop! Any more of those pics and I'll leave sooner than I ever expected I would. Hmmm, let's se...Georgian Bay in the summe...

Cleaning sails? Y/N
I have progressed enough with AURORA's (P. Rhodes; SWIFTSURE 33) repairs and rebuilding, to the point of looking at her sails. I have a spinaker, not sure which type though, a 180 Genny, 2x170 Genny's, 130 Genny and a self tacking Jib. 2 full batten Mains, one newer than the other, all usable. Does ...

tank embedded in foam, need removal
The sewage tank is located under the v berth structure. It was lais in a bed of expanding foam, left to set and had the hoses connected, in and out. The fitting are made from mild steel and have corroded to nothingness. I intent to remove the tank, clean up the interior of the hull, clean the tank a...

Sewage Tank Connection concerns...
Under the v berth in mySwiftsure33, there is a custom made ss sewage tank. The connection nipples appear to be mild steel, as they are badly corroded, the lower, suction clean-out is the worst. How is a mild steel nipple attaced to a ss tank? It doesn't appear to be welded, it's just there... I want...

Deep cycle batteries
Who makes reasonably priced reasonably reliable and reasonably long life deep cycle marine batteries? I used Canadian tire brand Nautilus Deep Cycle several years ago and never had a concern. I have the physical space for 3 house batteries and one cranker. I will be running a small freezer/fridge, c...

Re: Could it be????
I've just bought a Swiftsure33. AURORA is in a thousand pieces and in 4 barns, requiring lots of restoration and repair. Some intervention as well. Same colour as the boat pictured, but with tons of good stuff included. I hope to have restored enough integrity into this boat that I can sail her this...

Re: Need ideas to "fuss" up my sailboat
Instead of fussing up a boat to make it appear as it always wasn't, why not buy my my boat www.woodenboatholdfast.yolasite.com ? She was built salty, looks salty, sails awesomely, and best of all contains many new parts. HOLDFAST is a Bristol Channel Pilot Boat, 6.5 tons, full keel. I spent 3500 hou...

Re: SWIFTSURE 33
I've just bought a Swiftsure 33. AURORA. First looks leave the impression that mine, (8 years inside a barn) is in better condition than the vesel in the photo. Mine is in "a thousand" parts in 4 barns on a farm. But I have the former owner acting as "head contractor", so far so ...

Re: Handheld Chartplotters
George, I use a Garmin 76c hand held,(the c being, it displays in colour, there is also a cs version which mean it also displays in colour but also has sensors, and they are altitude sensitive). I asked the West Marine guy about this and he said the 76cs version is for mountain climbers and not to d...

Re: Now THAT is a centerboard...
Richard, that's not my boat in the straps, that's Tom Young's boat. Mine is in a thousand pieces in 4 barns near Wasaga Beach in Georgian Bay. AURORA will be a hull up restoration/repair. Presently I sail a 1967 Bristol Channel pilot boat, named HOLDFAST, (see her at http://www.woodenboatholdfast.yo...

Re: Now THAT is a centerboard...
I'm new to this centre board on a cruiser idea. Always had a full keel pilot boat from west coast England. Real slogger in the heavy stuff no matter where you were pointing. I've just bought a Phillip Rhodes Swiftsure33 centre board sloop. Will I be that much more maneuverable whilst beating to wind...
