Re: Construction Approach for Miscellaneous Boxes, Etc.

You should have seen what passed for a "battery box" that was in there before I tore it out and put in the new one. If that can last for several years (which it evidently did), mine should last for 30.

Re: Construction Approach for Miscellaneous Boxes, Etc.

SIX layers of fiberglass for a box that will be inside the boat??? Seems like way overkill to me. I just built a new battery box for my 1968 Pearson, and a new bulkhead for in front of the engine. Both are made of a combination of solid wood (ripped and planed from standard construction-grade 2x lum...

Gotta love those old Pearsons.

So of course, August has come and gone. But I now am getting closer and closer to actually having the boat ready for launch. I spent all day last Sunday and all day today up there working on her. I re-bedded the leaking fixed port lights in my 1968 Pearson Wanderer - the aluminum frames seem to be pretty much identical to yours. I used butyl tape and thus far it's working like a charm. Well, I'm not a master shipwright or anything, but I do know that there are choices for something like that. It largely depends on what you want it to look like. It's hard to go wrong with teak or Honduras mahogany for that nice, traditional sailboat look. I would do some internet searching - you wi...

Yeah, that looks like it could be Honduran mahogany. Beautiful stuff and a little harder and stronger than some of the other mahoganys. The trouble with "mahogany" is that there are various woods that people refer to as "mahogany." Some mahoganies are actually pretty soft. I have...

Re: 1964 Hinterhoeller 28 hull #9

For something like that, I would stick with teak or angelique. You do not want red oak on your boat. Red oak is not rot-resistant and does not weather well. Not only that, it is what's known as a ring-porous wood, which makes it grainy and porous. It tends to be stringy and splintery to work with, a...

Red oak: no way.

Do a little research on template routing. You can make a template from that hole, using a piece of tempered hardboard (e.g., Masonite) and use a bearing-guided router bit with template routing collars to make pieces that will match it perfectly, then epoxy them in.

I will say that -- considering your dinghy-on-cabintop desire -- the Coaster/Wanderer give you less cabin-top dinghy space than some of the slightly smaller boats (similar 28 and 29 footers), from what I have seen. The P.O. of my boat kept an 8-foot stitch-and-glue marine ply dinghy on the foredeck...
