Working for a private school doesn't provide me with many financial rewards, but I do get lots of time off. Over the past few days I spent way to much time in marine consignments stores in RI and CT. I was at Marine Consignment of Wickford (RI) and was waiting to part with my credit card in exchange...

I used Star Ten (http://www.starten.com/) on my interior. It didn't take everything off, but that's because I tried to use it at near-freezing temperatures (while luxuriating in my boat shed ;-)> ). Use it over 60 degrees and let it sit, and it will make a mess but will take off lots of old paint.

I tried the 3/16" from Defender, as recommended on the National Triton MIR site. It was too big. I saw another recommendation for using teflon stuffing box packing. I put it in with silicone caulk, and that seemed to work, but it's still too early to tell. I'll get you a picture soon, but my po...

While we are on the subject of those type winches- does any one have a picture of one of the winch handles? Or can you tell me where to GET a winch handle for them? I have two of those winches, in aluminum, but no handle at all. Charile, I think I have a winch handle for one of those. It came with ...

hehe...oh, I think I can probably scrounge up a lunch. Ooh, can it be at that place on Route 1 that has the crabmeat clubs? I'll scrape paint for that! Although, I don't think crab goes well with bon-bons. Maybe for dessert? I vote for Tim providing lunch for an NETA meeting! Or some subset thereof...

Congrats...she's looking great. A long road, for sure, but I'm sure you agree it was all worthwhile now, and for the seasons to come. Thanks, Tim. I'm just so glad to be sailing her rather than looking at her in my driveway! Sure beats the way I remember seeing her in S. Dartmouth on that rainy day...

Sweet! :) Very clean looking, nice job Mark! Thanks, Kurt. I'll post some pictures with more detail eventually. Right now I think one reason it looks clean is there's no bow rail, stern rail, or stanchions. As much as I like the look I plan to install those before next season. I also removed the st...

Finally, a photo of TIKVAH!
I just got around to resizing this photo I took last month at my mooring in Boston Harbor. http://home.comcast.net/~markwhipple/Boats/images/Tikvah%2009%2011%202005%20A%20small.JPG Tikvah was in my driveway under renovation for the last 4 1/2 years. This picture was taken on 9/11/2005, a month after...

I put two wire wheels on my bench grinder - a fine and a coarse grade. My ports and other hardware were caked with caulk and paint. Using both wheels worked well and seemed to be pretty efficient, although there were some spots that required a Dremel. I'm planning to leave mine bare, so I didn't bot...

Howard, I've only sailed on a Bristol 29.9, and in relatively calm waters. It's more lively than a Triton, but I wonder if it might pound a bit more in a seaway. It's more beamy than a Triton, and like many of the Bristols I've seen, more of the interior is finished with natural wood (albeit veneer)...

1. Have you removed your mast beam? Yes 2. Did you replace the beam with new, or reinforce the old somehow? The beam (2 parts, forward and aft of the v-berth bulkhead) was in very good shape. I don't plan to replace it, but after grinding off some bondo-like filler on the top of it, I will probably ...

RE: parking the the boat show - can't you park at Hamilton Marine, go in and buy something from the big sale they are usually having, and then walk over to the boat show? Either that, or pay some outrageous price (by Maine standards) to park on somebody's front lawn. Now, if you really want outrageo...

Brock, I don't have all the details in front of me, but I know the Airhead came with peat moss to throw in with the solid waste and sugar for the urine. There were some specific instructions about how much and when, but nothing too complicated. The references provided by the guy who builds these wer...

To avoid the crushing weight of snow you do need a tall ridge and steep sides. My shelter is a variation on the 1x theme. The supports are 2 lengths of 1x3 with blocks of 1x between them. You can put a curve in them this way. The supports go all the way to the ground. This structure lets me move aro...

Just in case you want to see what an Airhead looks like in a Triton: http://www.whipplefamily.com/images/triton/airhead_small_01.jpg It's a little high - I'm about 6' tall and I have to lean over a little when sitting on it. I haven't actually installed it yet, so I'll have to get back to you on how...

Not exactly plastic, but still a classic
Here's a steel-hull project boat worthy of the term, "full keel".
