Light weight dinghy
Tweaking my back by turning over the Eastport pram has led me on the quest for a truly light weight tender. I found an interesting site called Geodesic Airolite Boat Designs. The model that caught my attention (and there are quite a few nice models) is the Black Fly 8. http://www3.telus.net/sailing/...

(Rachel, you're right on the money,as always) http://www3.telus.net/sailing/epp.jpg On my East Port Pram I attached the bottom rub strips with bronze screws and a layer of thickened epoxy. I left the screws i...

Some Albin Marin trivia: After a little Googling I found the Albin Singoalla had a production run of only 50 boats. Albin made a total of 17 different sailboats, as chronicled in these charts . The Vega was the most prolific at about 3500 vessels. Albin Viggen, 1200 units (25' fin keel, skeg rudder)...

I swear by Zinsser : see details in this link which includes a post by me extolling the virtues of Zinsser. My Vega interior is done this way and it's very tough, scrubbabale (is that a word?) and looks great in a satin finish. It's stood the test of time. I bought it at Home Depot (in Canada, eh!) ...

This hinged step from Rig Rite looks interesting. You could lower the mast either way as there is a pin at both ends.

The nice thing is if your valve fails or freezes up you simply unscrew it and thread on a new one leaving the thru-hull, through bolts and sealant untouched. That's especially handy, too, when Groco issues a recall on the valves ... makes them a lot easier to replace! I see you have the ones with t...

Kristian: Good idea on swapping out the toggles on one end of the turnbuckle. However, I'm going to replace the turnbuckles when I replace the wire, as the old ones are ... well ... old! The existing ones are ss, the new ones will be bronze. Using all Hayn hardware, my plan (today) is to replace the...

Turnbuckle choices
I'm slowly going over my standing rigging (all metric, but I'll keep this in inches), with the intention of replacing the whole works sometime in the future. All my wire is the same size (3/16") and is probably the original stuff. No sign of cracks in the swage terminals, and not a hint of corr...

One idea they mentioned for really bad situations, which I hope none of us will ever see, that I quite liked was using the spinnaker halyard or topping lift for a safety line. I can see it now: heeled over at 30 degrees, sailing along on autopilot, and hanging over (or in) the water like an errant ...

In my experience (one boat done in a similar product) it looks good, stands up well, and is VERY grippy when wet or dry, and comfortable to kneel on in shorts. That said, you need a special roller to apply it, and it's difficult to keep really clean, but stands up well to scrubbing. On the boat I di...

After re-reading the service bulletin I see now that the whole unit needs to be replaced. I would demand they replace these with their top of the line seacocks as a way of making good on the labor and annoyance involved. Wow! I'm requesting they include new thru hulls, as they will probably get des...

I agree with you, Noah. I think it would add a nice fore/aft balance to the whole look. You are sooooo close to perfection :-)Noah wrote:I think you guys should play around with extending the cabin side (but not that Cabin) forward of the mast like they do with the Folkboat.
Just my 2 cents (Cdn.) worth.

Wow...that old Homelite looks just like one my Dad had when I was growing up! It was part of my father-in-law's estate. We both bought one at the same time, 1972, when we bought adjoining properties to build on. I still have mine, but have sold his. In town today I managed to pick up all the pieces...

The thing I don't like about external strainers is that if (when?) they clog, you have no choice but to go over the side to unclog it. Pulling the raw water hose off the pump and blowing through it should clear the outside screen. I have an external protruding-type strainer, as well as a metal bask...

Vega Port Lites
My next project is to install a pair of forward facing port lites (a la Triton) but keep the original Vega style and appearance. The new lites will be identical in size to those in the forward cabin. The Vega lites are held in with a two piece rubber weatherstrip / locking strip combination. http://...

Thanks for the links, guys. I managed to find exact replacements at Smalley Steel Ring Company. The good news was they had a local distributor who stocked them, and could supply them to a nearby bearing shop for re-sale. Then the manager of a local marine store found a couple in her own personal spa...
