I've seen who I believe to be the owners on the boat a couple of times, but I never had the opportunity to stop and speak to them. As far as I could tell, it looked like they were doing some minor repair, as if they were intending to fix it up. But to answer your question, no, I do not know their ac...

Six months after Ivan....
At the shipyard where I work are 2 "plots" of land for dry storing boats which have been damaged or are still available at auction-- about 25 acres worth of boats of all types in all conditions. Here is one which I though would interest the gang. Overall, this one came through relatively u...

During the coldest days down here, if I felt I had to epoxy, I would begin by warming the resin and hardner by setting the cans on a radiator heater. I would mix the epoxy in the heated room (and wet out glass, if used), and I would take that out to the boat. I would have run heaters in the boat to ...
Primers
Tim,
I am curious as to what primers you are using on your interior beadboard. I glanced through the daysailor site and did not see a specific product mentioned.
It is really great to see such progress on the boat. Keep up the good work!

I also read somewhere that the rigs without a triatic stay cannot fly a mizzen staysail. Though I am not experienced with either a ketch rig or the sailing conditions under which one would fly a mizzen staysail, I believe that for tradewinds sailing, it may be one of the biggest advantages of the ke...

I can really sympathize with you over that one. I have nearly bought another boat on 3 separate occasions in the last 3 months. The first was a Willard 33, for $10000 with minimal damage. The second was an older Pearson 33 which had been sunk for 2 weeks for $2000, and the third was a Hunter 27 for ...

It's a little over the top, but this is a boat which I had the misfortune of working on recently. She was in the yard during the storm (Ivan) and was blown over; one jackstand punched a hole in the hull and damaged some of the cabinetry. Here is what she looks like now. http://heartofgoldsails.com/S...

Tim, I recently used Awl Fair for the first time. It mixed easily and applied very smoothly. It took several hours to kick, but it sanded very well, with no problems. A bit on the pricy side, but certainly worthy of the Awl Grip name. I would not apply this too thick, but so far it is an excellent f...

Simon, I can address some of your issues generically--I am not specifically familiar with the Lapworth Gladiator, but many boats of that era were built in a similar fashion. To answer your second question first, are the hull and deck bonded, probably not. If you can inspect the joint from the inside...

Let's see if we can drum up some interest in this one. As Tim suggested, I contacted West System. Bruce Niederer replyed: Yes you can mix the hardeners (205 + 206) if you are using the pumps or measuring by volume because they are both 5:1 by volume. Reading between the lines, I believe that he was stating that these two can be mixed, but the 207 and 20...

Mixing West System hardners
I recently found myself in a discussion with a yard supervisor at the local boatworks who stated that you could not mix West System 205 (fast) and 206 (slow) hardners to create a "somewhere in between" cure time. I am certain that I have read somewhere that it can be done, but several days...

Recent dealings after Hurricane Ivan put me in touch with this slightly damaged beauty. The cost of a new furler, logically speaking, of course
Here's a rational thought progression for the group (any dissenting voices, speak up). I am going to get a new furler. To save money, I could cut down the old genny (which really is too big for this boat) and have a sunbrella luff attached, but it would only cost a little more to get a new genny whi...
