Down here in Cape May we got about 3" - 5". Had been looking forward to being snowed in - some of the predictions were up to 12". Did the bread and milk thing - snow didn't start here until the middle of the night Saturday. I'll be out of the driveway without a problem tomorrow - back...

I don't think I called the Daysailor project a restoration. I see it as more like a rebuilding/customization taken in a new direction, and I think it was done carefully and discreetly (as if he'd do it any other way). Robert The Gray's work on Whisper is, I think, careful and discreet customization....

I agree with you . . .

. . . but what Tim did in the case of the Daysailor probably falls under the category addressed in the last paragraph of 'Rule 3' Customizing, rebuilding, or upgrading (whatever you want to call it) of any "classic" should be done carefully and discreetly in order to maintain the boat's ap...

Could be that a lot of you old hands have seen this article - I just read it this morning. Vaitses' book has a lot of background information about fiberglass and resin. All the different mats, cloths, rovings, polyester, vinylester and epoxy resins . . . very thorough, but practical at the same time.
Excellent for a beginner like me.

Read - can't help with a lot of those questions - I'm in the early stages of a boat reno myself, and I've gotten a lot of good info from a book I got at the library:
The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual by Allan H. Vaitses

Good luck.

Except for the keel and flush deck, the numbers on your boat (at sailcalc) come out a lot like the numbers for my project boat. Yours looks great - and two seasons on her already. Have you taken any dogs out sailing? Pictures?

Martin - have you tried asking around at a local marina for a good mover? I found a good mover here in my area by asking boat friends for recommendations. He had a hydraulic trailer and did a great job of tucking the boat into the corner of my yard. Charged $125 for about a three mile move.

Actually, though, I was responding to some kind of self-referential meta-remark (or some such thing) by Tim. Listening to my inner bozo . . .

But I really hate it when some bozo removes it from the masthead after the mast is unstepped and then places it stupidly on the dock, where later on the same bozo kicks it overboard. (This is made even worse by the fact that the bozo even thought, while placing the Windex on the dock, that it was a...

Re: mast

Thanks, fellas - of course I was hoping you wouldn't see a problem, but I didn't want to assume that it'd be okay. Great answers, BTW, starting with Ken: some people have more weight than that bolted to the mast for the fun of it. and Tim, as always, thanks. Matt, I've heard about that SF Bay. The f...

Mast size question

The mast that came with my 'project' boat has a rather large crack in it, just about halfway up the length. I've been given a mast and boom. The mast that was on my boat is 30' long and approximately 3.5" x 5" with a sail slot for rope. The gift mast is 30' long, but about 4" x 6"...

Grounded at Cape May Point

Hello, all - Here is an excerpt from my diary about a recent grounding at CMP State Park. Beautiful boat, David

I think the decision to get the boat within arm's reach was a good one. I purchased a project boat in October and deliberated for a couple of weeks where I would put it. A friend with lots of boat restoration experience convinced me that I should get it as close to my home (and shop) as possible. Al...

Basic Electrical System Info?

Need a reference source for basic info on boat wiring. I have a project boat (1967 24' f'glass sloop built in Nova Scotia) that needs a little of everything and a lot of some things. My previous boat owning/sailing experience was with a wooden Thistle I owned 25 years ago. There's a panel with 6 swi...
