Re: I need a fix for my main hatch
I don't know the history of the situation so I can't tell if it progressed. We didn't use the boat before I took everything apart & put it back together again. Could be that I out something back incorrectly, but apart from the tracks I can't see another way. The shoulder to mount the ovals is on...

I need a fix for my main hatch
My main hatch can come off the tracks with less effort than I'd like. The setup may be common, I don't know, but the hatch slides on SS rails, and the hatch holds onto the rails with 4 bronze ovals that overlap the underside of the rails. If you push the hatch to one side it can be lifted straight u...

New galley table
I just finished a new table for the galley. I can't claim to have made the inlay, it came pre-made at Rockler. I routered out some walnut to set it in. The table itself is Walnut, the fiddles are African Mahogany. Initially wanted to simply oil it since it looked so nice with just a wipe of mineral ...

Polysulfide Cure Rate to Paint Over?
I've got some woodwork I just fastened and has a little bead of polysulfide (Life Calk) that runs around the perimeter. The specs from Boat Life say tack free in 24 hours and cures in 7 days. Re: Keep an old bronze prop shaft, or replace?
This is just a follow up. The pink on the shaft ended up being just on the surface and fine steel wool was able to polish it off, so I was less worried about the shaft as far as electrolysis is concerned. I did end up making the drive to NE Prop yesterday with my shaft, prop and coupling. I must say...

As part of my cutlass bearing project, and with the stern tube and shaft log out of the way, I was able to get the shaft out of the boat easily. Now that I've cleaned it up I'm wondering if I should I re-use this shaft? http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DjiBX1vNLIU/S8B-JZbw9pI/AAAAAAAAEvo/54nsDbpfN3E/s800/IMG_5...

Bringing this old subject back up because this spring I see some new cracks here and there in the tabbing. Thanks Rachel, My reasoning for removing the housing is that I don't think the shaft will come out completely without removing part of the coupling on the inboard side of the shaft. I'll step into the discussion a little late with a vote for System Three LPU. I painted by boat May 2008, was very happy with the results and with two seasons it has held up great. I've dropped tools, dragged chain, even had a screwdriver slip and auger in.. and the finish does seem very durable. Lo...

Sadly, plain varnish has held up the best. Why is that sad? I guess I find varnish fussy in a way that I don't enjoy. How often do engine mounts require replacement? I've been told "every few years" and I know lots of people who never replaced their mounts, and have a smooth aligned engine regardless. Vetus (my engine) does not publish a timetable for this that I can find. My boat has a 10 year old Vetus ...

Re: Sacrificial Anode Needed on Bronze shaft?
Rachel, From what I understand it can impede water flow. Re: Sacrificial Anode Needed on Bronze shaft?
Thanks everyone.
I was able to fit a shaft zinc, after I hack-sawed it down to 17mm in width. It fits fine, so I'll leave it there. Over the winter I may look into the nut-zinc setup if it looks easier. I'm just surprised to learn that's it's less of an issue than I thought.

I actually have a set screw in the coupling. Where you can see a hole in the coupling diagram, I have that and it is threaded with an allen head set screw inside. Great post!
I'll add that the System Three LPU is easy to repair. I painted my decks with it last summer, and had lots more work to do on the boat. A "scratch or two" did occur. This spring before launch I sanded the areas and touched up with little brushes and the repair is invisible.
