Another Electrical Wiring Question (or two)
I'm planning m re-wire project, and one aspect I go back and forth on is the mast wiring. My mast is wired with 14/3 with tails that enter the cabin and will connect to a terminal block. I'm thinking how nice and neat it would be to run a single length of Anchor Mast Cable (14/5 or 12/5) from the di...

I've got bronze turnbuckle bodies with stainless legs, so I'm looking for a good source to buy stainless bodies from. I found this site: http://www.stainless-steel-direct.com that has very cheap prices. Chinese, of course. But isn't it all now? They appear to be this company: http://www.vinox.tw/new...

David, I'll preface what I say here by admitting that I have limited practical experience with electrical systems in general. That said, I just called Blue Sea Systems, the manufacturer of the panel I just ordered, and spoke with their tech support. They said that using a breaker switch as an on/off...

I'm shopping for a new Distribution Panel for my rewiring job. My needs are simple as I like to keep the system simple. I'm looking at the Blue-Sea 8 breaker panel. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=11361&familyName=Blue+Sea+Systems+8+Position+Toggle+DC+Circuit+...

Looking for general rewiring tips
I need to rewire, and I have limited experience. Having read a number of books on the subject, I have a good understanding of the concepts involved. Seems most of the books explain the fundamental ideas and goals. Before I begin, I'd like to read further on tips and techniques that go beyond the bas...

Painting plastic laminate
Hi everyone, I've just finished sanding the interior of my Alberg 30, and discovered faux-woodgrain plastic laminate on the bulkheads under the old paint. I'm planning on re painting if the rain ever stops. My original plan was to use an Interlux primer under Interlux Yacht Enamel. However, I'm conc...

Rewiring an old navigation light
I've got a nice bronze navigation light that sits on my taffrail. The outside is good, I have a new globe for it, but the inside electricals are corroded. See: http://picasaweb.google.com/fongemie/Lights I originally thought it would be nice to rewire this using LEDs, and got a good deal on some &qu...

I've used LEXEL sealant around the house and it's worked great. I just bought some to seal an acrylic sheet to a wooden hatch. http://www.sashcosealants.com/Home_Improvement/Lexel.aspx It's very clear, durable and you can paint it (with latex paints). I just sealed some plastic portlights with Butyl...

I'll second the idea that hard shell bouys with the pendant attached to the top are a pain. I was on one last season and fought it the whole summer. It was always tangling. Once I added a second pendant for a storm, and within a few days it was tightly wrapped up, and one pendant was nearly sawed th...

Question on toe-rail fairlead placement
I'm getting near the point where I need to put some sort of fairlead for a mooring pendant up at the bow. When I got the boat last fall, the toerail was a little damaged where the fairlead attaches, as if the fairlead was subjected to a severe upward pull. http://lh3.ggpht.com/fongemie/SCY5Nm96gvI/A...

Looking for a good boat transport
Anyone have any recommendations for someone who can transport boats over land in the Portland Maine area??
If I can get this boat finished here soon, I'll need to get it to the water.
Thanks,
Jeff

I've got a Catalina 22, which is not exactly a plastic classic~, but since my Alberg may not be ready for this season we're looking at putting the Catalina in the water. I've got the portlights out of my Alberg, and before I put this all back together, I'd like to clean up the aluminum frames. What do you all use for a de-waxing solvent? Are the marine specific dewaxers really any better than just toluene? Any other readily (hardware store) solvents recommended??

I bought a 100 count package of these 1 oz measured cups from Duckworks:

No idea what a dram is, but thats my favorite measurement. 6 drams total of epoxy often seems like a handy size.

Thanks for the tip on the methylene chloride softening fiberglass. I was unaware. I was only kidding about adding it to primer, however after about 4 hours of holding a sander over my head yesterday the thought of that big beautiful can of Super Stip in the barn entered my mind more than once. -jeff

Does TSP actually soften a finish? I thought it was just a strong cleaner to remove surface contamination. The flap wheel might work. Wire brush even. I'm sick of sanding. What I'm really looking for is a wonderful primer that sticks to anything. Perhaps primer with a little methylene chloride mixed...

Repainting glossy rough surfaces - getting stick
I'm repainting my interior. Alberg 30, no liner. Most areas are easy enough (relatively) to sand & prepare, but I've got some very rough fiberglass on the inside of the hull that's got that glossy old paint on there. It's way to rough to sand. I'm going to get a few 3m scotchbrite type pads to t...

Thanks everyone. We've got everything out and are about ready to begin some heavy sanding. It looks like some latex paint that didn't stick to super-gloss pink enamel. One option, I may try is to go in with a knife and something to pry with and see if I can just...

Hi everyone, I was at the Maine Wooden Boat Builders Show a couple weeks ago and noticed a wooden hatch where the underside had s nice tubular rubber gasket that was set into a trough that looked to be routed. Laminating & bending mahogany to a curve- what glue??
I'm replacing the taffrail on my Alberg30 and have a mold built that replicates the crown of the deck. The plan is to glue-laminate three layers of mahogany (total thickness 2") down horizontally onto the mold. After a couple of test runs using pine and GorillaGlue, the shape of the mold is per...
