Arcadia, Yes, I have questions: Did you remove the old tank without destroying it? If yes... How? The tank has two bands of fiberglass holding it up and appears to be bedded in 5200. If the tank cannot come out in one piece, I will not loose sleep over it. I certainly am interested not only in your ...

A Monel tank is a bad thing?
Paper Moon is in the process of getting a new diesel. Yes.... pictures to follow. The mechanic tells me that I need to replace the Monel tank. While it is 40 years old, I was planning on removing the tank, cutting an access hole in the top, cleaning it out, installing the access plate, pressure test...

Duncan, Thanks for the clarification. I thought the fuses you were talking about were the fuses that are part of the panel. If you keep the extra fuse block, I would preferably power all the fuses from one rocker switch through one 10 or 15 amp fuse. Second choice would be directly from the feed fro...

Duncan, It appears you have a switch and fuse set up. The lead from the battery switch (Hot) goes to the buss. The buss, as you described, is connected to the switch. From the switch, there should be a short jumper wire to one fuse. Then from the other side of the fuse to the light(s). As stated abo...

I painted my Sea Sprite topsides three times. Once with Petit and twice with Brightsides. I used the appropriate thinner for each and Penetrol. I had excellent results each time. Penetrol does not thin the paint, it just helps it to flow out better. I have also found that if you paint right out of t...

Usually the first boat with the kahonnes (sic?) to port start gets away with it while the fleet yells SOB. The boats in the following classes can hear a slam as the door closes. When Marty Lyons was in our class with Celebration on Wednesdays, that was his trick. Scratch boat, port tack at the pin e...

One of the scariest and most satisfying realizations about brand new sails was when we got the new main for our first boat, the Sea Sprite. We were tacking through the mooring field and at the last minute I decided to duck a moored boat versus sailing above it and couldn't fall off. As soon as I rel...

gjvp is right, moving the guy forward pulls the pole down. I think it appears tight because the chute was over sheeted. The pole should be level and the clews should be level. In addition, (and the toughest one to check) is that the line from tack to clew on the spinnaker should be approximately par...

Bly, She is beautiful. If the Sea Sprite is any indication, she will be looking even better as time goes on. I don't mean to imply you are not done yet. One said that they took a step backwards on the serviceability. He blamed it on a statement where Yanmar was moving ahead with the larger engines. He figured that by staying silent on the small engines that they were leaving them alone but he was wrong. The water pump on the new model HM vs GM I thi...

Why no the Beta Marine BD1005? It is 28 HP which is between the other two. Is this a list of used diesels and those are your options? I would like to take exception to the black bottom issue. While I agree with the power boats and Benneteau comment, I think it needs to be expanded to Black is the new blue. Try some Penetrol
Yes, I am fairly new here but I have learned quite a bit about varnish from a few professionals. Take a small can and try 1/3 each of varnish, Penetrol and thinner. It sounds like it may already be thinned enough. Use the better interlux thinner or equivalent and give it a try. If the brush pulls, a...

For me it is not the gas it is the ignition system. The only boat that I am familiar with long term that had an A-4 did the rebuild with electronic ignition, three years later they did it again and one year later replaced it with a Beta. If it is strictly for economy, the pro A-4s have a good point....

There is a God
Don't ask me to explain. I went down to the boat, after making arrangements with the mechanic to repower and with the yard to haul. It was all going to start next Friday. Since I couldn't get the alternate mechanic to the boat to verify that what I heard was metal to metal, a relatively knowledgeabl...

If you look at it as an exaggeration it may make sense. For starting with the small patch (the Casey method) picture the multi layer patch as a series of steps like a pyramid and turn it upside down against the bevel. There is plenty of space for solid epoxy and small areas where the cloth is in con...

Sea Sprite 34 and Luders 33
The Older SS 34 with the stepped roof that you mentioned is more likely the Allied Luders 33. Both were designed by Alfred "Bill" Luders and both are very similar. The Sea Sprite 34 was Bill's last production boat design. It is not a full foot longer as you would think, they just included ...
