Questions on sources for MD5 consumables

Post by Mark W, Elite 32 »

Now I know that no-one to date has fitted a Volvo MD5 to a Triton, nor would they if they had any sense, but she's hard working and flawless to date but I need to feed her consumables to keep her that way.

So I have been investigating appropriate and pattern spares for our 1984 (launched 87) Elite 32 with a Volvo MD5 Diesel.

Parts I am focussed on are :
  • Impeller
    Oil Filters
    Fuel Filters
    Alternator belts
Here's the results of my investigation to date, I would appreciate feedback and commentary, especially on local/online sources for the same :

Impeller
Previous owner has noted "875783" in the owners manual but I am having issues reconciling this
Possibly the same as Jabsco 22405-0001 (but not sure) .. .. ..
Could this be the same as 183076 from Shads ? ( http://www.theshadconnection.com/cgi-bi ... i?page=675 )
or maybe the 09-808B item at http://www.johnson-pump.com/JPMarine/PD ... peller.pdf
or maybe the 18-3076 item at http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/Volvo/volvo4.htm

Oil Filter
Again, previous owner records this as a Volvo part # 834337 which seems about right - or is it ?.
Cross reference this to either a Baldwin BT223 or a FRAM PH3614 (near as I can reckon)
What's in there now is a Napa Gold 1700001 (?) which has what seems to be called an anti drain back valve.
Anyway, Shads seems to reckon this is the same as their 187878 ( http://www.theshadconnection.com/cgi-bi ... i?page=594 ) but I am not confident on this
Anyway - the FRAM part is about $5.00, am I in the right ballpark here ?

Fuel Filter
Handwriting again indicates 829913-3 which seems to be a Bosch model reference
Looks like its also in the CS30 on their 18HP motor and can be found online (UK site) here http://www.chandleryonline.com/index.php?category=179
I run out of other options on this one pretty quick, Google searches not being very helpful, not my local West Marine store - any clues ?

Alternator Belts
Seems to be a 9.5 x 1325 and opinion on the web is to replace with a 10 x 1325 - Near as damn it seems to be the opinion.
I should be able to pick one of these up anywhere - right ?

I'm not trying to shirk the legwork here but it's very frustrating trying to track all this stuff down - once I have them for the first time then the rerpalcments eachh year thereafter will be easy (because I'll buy 6 of everything and always carry 2 as spares).

Thanks

Volvo Parts

I can't comment on the impeller, although I'm positive there is a Volvo replacement available (I had an MD-2 in my Bristol for years and had no problems finding impellers or other comsummables). There should be a Fram oil filter that will match up, or Wix or NAPA for that matter. The slightly wider alternator belt (by .5 mm) is probably fine; better than going narrower which would force it deeper into the groove of the pulleys and create more heat to the belt. The 10 mm wide belt will just be a little proud.

As to a fuel filter, why not use a Racor and ignore the Volvo part?
