Rubber gaskets for hatches needed

Hi everyone,

I was at the Maine Wooden Boat Builders Show a couple weeks ago and noticed a wooden hatch where the underside had s nice tubular rubber gasket that was set into a trough that looked to be routed.

I'm building new wood hatches for my Alberg30 and would like to do the same, but I'm having trouble locating the actual gasket material.

McMaster Carr has some soft rubber rod, under raw materials, but I'd like to find some locally (to maine) where I can see what it feels like since I'm uncertain this stuff is suitable.

Can anyone think of a retail business that would sell such a material? I'll check with my local auto parts store to see if they have anything.

Any suggestions appreciated...

I should correct myself, I need a rubber seal, not gasket.

Mail order auto parts will have a variety of rubber seals.

JC 'Chintzy' for example. On a quick look I didn't see a page with the different styles illustrated, only by vehicle type. www.aircraftspruce.com is another source.

Locally, how about Maine Rubber?

Restoration Specialties & Supply Co.has a good catalog of stuff, and their mail order service is good.

The seal itself should be shaped like that foam backer rod stuff, but made from better rubber.

McMaster Carr has some EPDM rod that might work, but the one I see comes in 100 foot rolls. Part # 8605K43

Tim, thanks for the tip on Maine Rubber, Westbrook isn't too far for me. I'll give them a call.
