Interesting site. Funny Charleston, SC is not listed as there seems to be more commercial traffic in and out of here then there was in Baltimore.
WRT pirates, the information on this site is undoubtedly from the transponder carried aboard large commercial vessels. This transponder would let you, with the appropriate software, track the vessel in real time anywhere in the world. A savvy pirate could use this to actually vector his vessel to the target vessel. Technology can work for ye and again' ye mates...

Never thought about this until I realized all our tugs have an AIS system due to regulation and now I can find out where they are with out having to call- sort of like big brother watching!!
The Lucinda Smith will be leaving Quincy Ma this evening bound for Charleton, SC with 2 barges in tow. I'm knocking on wood (my head) for good weather/luck though it seems a bit of weather is due tommorrow. We plan to run up the sound and through NY harbor and get 3-5" rather than the 8' called for outside- after that all down wind to Hatteras!

Check out the English Channel. It looks like a nightmare. Imagine transiting that in heavy weather. get your running light configurations down, or get AIS.

I have A.I.S. onboard and it's great for crossing the multiple shipping lanes in Juan de Fuca Straight. It's good to know exactly where and how fast those big boys are going. It even shows large ferries hiding behind headlands, which don't show up on radar.
I see Standard Horizons has a VHF Radio with built-in A.I.S.
