tachometer on diesel

Post by mitiempo »

hi
I"m redoing my engine panel to include gauges instead of idiot lights. This will include oil pressure, water temp, hourmeter and fuel gauge for the new tank I just installed. I would also like to add a tach. My engine is a Yanmar YSE8. What is the best way to do this? I did find this on a recommendation from the CS owners group :http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/diesel.php
What other ideas are out there?
Thanks
Brian

Many tachometers get their input from the alternator, so you can hook one up to that.

Here's some discussion on it: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f14 ... -3926.html

Hi Brian,

I added a tach to my Yanmar engine panel a few years ago. The Yanmar 3QM30 (H) engine has a port on the engine's bell housing to screw in a tach sender unit -- this unit mates with a compatable display unit on the engine control panel. It was a few hundred dollars for the two units together -- somewhat pricey -- however, since it counts the individual teeth on the flywheel it is dead-on accurate at all times. The guys over at Torresen Marine were very helpful making sure I received the correct unit for my engine.

You can take your alternator to a starter/alternator shop and they can add a tach pick up if it doesn't have one. Pretty cheap.

The only disadvantage of picking up off the alternator is that you have to rev the engine up to make it work. Mine kick in about 1200 rpm.

Thanks for your replies. I am currently thinking that I will use a Tiny-Tach. It seems to be the easiest to install and reports are that it is accurate. http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/diesel.php#
