Raw water strainer

Post by windrose »

Another dumb question..... I am putting a strainer on the thru hull for the raw water foot pump and deck wash. The strainer has fins on about 2/3 of it and is solid on a 1/3 of it, sort of bell shaped. It would seem to me the solid part would go forward to divert debris from the intake, however, the one existing on the boat for the motor has the fins forward... which also makes sense as this forces more water into the strainer when the boat is making headway. So, which direction should I put the fins?

We kicked this can around the yard a few years ago. As I recall, we landed on something to the effect of "in a displacement hull, it makes no difference'.

Typically, the solid part of the strainer is installed facing forward, at least on low-speed boats.

Practically speaking, it doesn't matter, particularly in the use you're intending.
