Bristol 32 project boat on Ebay

Post by Sailordave »

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bristol- ... 439ddfc59a

Starting bid is $1000

Yachtworld has a bunch ranging from 16K to over 30K.

Hmmmmm. If I didn't already have a Lightning to finish and not enough time in the day I'd consider this. Any idea of ?much one would sink into this boat to make it "Bristol" finished?
Pun intended.

The cost for a total restoration can have quite a range in both dollars and time invested. Below are a few of the factors to consider:

1. How much of the work are you capable of doing as well as willing to do and yourself. Yard labor rates around the Chesapeake vary from $75 to $100 per hour, so you can see where a huge bill can be run up rather quickly.

2. Will you be upgrading the electrical system to handle all of the modern conveniences?

3. Will you be upgrading all the plumbing systems?

4. Galley upgrades.....New stove? Refrigeration?

5. Upgrading sail inventory?

6. New stnding rigging?

7. New running rigging including line, blocks, winches, and rope clutches?

8. News electronics? (radar, vhf, sailing instruments, chart plotter etc.)

9. Does hull and deck need painting? Do it yourself or possibly Awlgrip job by boatyard?

10. Interior upgrades
A) New cushions?
B) Change interior layout?
C) Refinish interior?

11. Engine work or possible repower?

12. Spars: Do they need repainting?

13. Chainplates.....Do they need rebedding or replacing? Condition of attachment points for chainplates?

This was not meant to discourage you but as you can see, the amount of work depends upon each person's perception of bringing her back to bristol condition.

If you decide to go ahead with this project please keep all of us posted and updated with photos of your progress.

Good luck

Sailordave - That Bristol 32 project boat can be great if you want a project boat, one that you can customize to your desires..

However if you want to get sailing at a low price, not so good. Often Bristol 32s pushing the top price range you gave... those often are the best deals. New diesel engines with installation costs often run 10 to 15k. New sails often run 5 to 8k for this type of boat. Add that all other little bits so you can see how the most expensive Bristol 32s are actually the cheapest when you factor in future upgrade costs.
