Chrome Deplating
I'm trying to remove the rest of the chrome from my port lights. I'm using muriatic acid and a battery charger set at 2 amp.
It works good while it's running but the charger keeps tripping out. Any solution? Thanks.

Re: Chrome Deplating
Well, usually people are trying to get chrome onto stuff. I don't know that acid and an electrical charge will erode the chrome exclusively. If there are other metal parts it will all dissolve together.

Re: Chrome Deplating
It does work, I have four done already. It's just hard on the battery charger.
After four it burnt out.

I used a wire wheel in a Dremel tool and scrubbed it off. Did all the chromed ( read measled) bronze on a Vanguard 32 that way

Re: Chrome Deplating
You must of had silver paint on yours, even on a big grinder with a wire wheel it does nothing to the chrome.

Re: Chrome Deplating
lol- in 1962, Pearson did NOT use silver paint on chromed Bronze. It was all messed up from years of exposure- that part peeling, part speckled look. And yes, it was a lot of work. But yes, I used a Dremel. Now thinking back, I may have had a sanding drum mounted part of the time.

Re: Chrome Deplating
Thanks for your help. I got it to work now. A electrician friend gave me transformer that works great.
In less the 30 minutes it comes out nice clean bronze with no residue.

Re: Chrome Deplating
Could you please describe your process for removing the plating and possibly post a schematic and specs for equipment used?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: Chrome Deplating
Here's how I did it. I got a big enough tub to set the frame in. I used Acid Magic 50/50 with water. Acid Magic is made by
Certol it's Muriatic acid but no fumes. I made a copper ring the same size as the port frame so it would draw off better.
I ran a copper wire on each end and tied together outside the tub. Then I hung the frame just above it in the solution
with a copper wire on each end. I started out with a battery charger set a 2-amps. The problem I had was it kept tripping
out. I got a couple done then, bypass the internal breaker and let it run for about 10 minutes at a time but then it burnt
out. The new transformer work great, It takes about 1/2 hour now. When I did the battery charger I had negative on the piece but when I switched to the other transformer I had to use the positive side because it started copper plating the frame.
It's pretty simple. Sure I couldn't get the picture's on.

Re: Chrome Deplating
Thanks Jeff. I have six 2 speed self tailing Lewmar winches with plating that is in poor shape. I want to remove the plating from them in preparation for re-plating. I appreciate your information on removing the old nasty finish. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Chrome Deplating
or you could take the parts to a chrome shop. they'll hang them in the tank as cathodes instead of anodes. nominal cost.
