The current boot stripe on my boat is about 3" above the water line on my boat. The current waterline / scum line is at the same spot as the factory scribe line. My first thought was to lower the boot stripe about 1 1/2 " or half way to the water line from its current location. I should probably mention the water here is 2x saltier than the ocean so she rides a little higher here. A factor I should probably consider since I may some day haul her to the coast.
#1 Should the boot stripe be at the water line or a predetermined distance above it?

The boot stripe should be above the actual waterline to prevent fouling, premature paint failure, and, mostly, to just plain look better. I think 2-3" above the actual waterline looks the best on a boat of this size.
