Companionway board storage

Post by Chesapeake Bob »

I want to build a permanent storage for the companionway boards. I was thinking of either a tray/shelf in the top of the quarterberth and lay the boards flat, or perhaps a ledge and store them vertically, perhaps using a bungee cord to hold them in place while sailing, also in the quaretberth. Any thoughts, ideas, experience?

Thanks!

Bob,
My Sabre has a plywood pouch (1/4 inch ply) built in the starboard cockpit sail locker on the bulkhead that separates the locker from the engine compartment. This is convenient since I do not have to take them below to stow them.

I made a board bag out of sunbrella, with dividers inside to hold the three boards seperate...

Whole bag gets tucked in the aft quarterberth no nicks, scratches or damage and all three together and easy to get to when needed...

Thought I had a picture....will have to get one.

Dick and Squid,

Thanks for the ideas. I have had in my mind the idea of something made of wood that I could install either in the quarterberth or the nav station. Dick, I like the plywood pouch idea. Any photos by chance? Anyone else?

Thanks,

Bob,
I don't have any photos and I am getting ready to have a hip replacement next week, but I will try to explain the construction of the plywood pouch or pockets..

1. There is a 1 x 1 mahogany cleat the length of the longest weather board screwed to the bulkhead horizontally and two more short 1 x 1 cleats screwed to the bulkhead vertically. A piece of 1/4 inch mahogany plywood is screwed to the 1 x 1 cleats creating the first pocket.
which is open at the top.

2. A second pocket is added to the first in a similar manner.

3. Add any additional pockets as required depending on the number of companionway weather boards you have on your boat.

It's a pretty simple project, but it works well.

Good luck!

Mike D... Great thread and the photo of the "magazine rack idea" is exactly the right concept.

Dick Coerse... Great discription and concept! And, you will be in my prayers as you undergo your hip surgery. I'll pray for a speedy recovery! Send me an e-mail and let me know how you are doing. Take my address below and type it correctly. It will come through.

Here is the way we stowed the 3-piece slide on our old CAL 21, another variation of the "magazine rack" idea. We located it just below the inside of the companionway opening.
