I will. The haul out facility is 2.5 hours away. I figured we could motor most, if not all, of the way there. If there is an issue, it should manifest itself with a couple hours of use.short version - run the engine.

Thanks Tim. You guessed it. In this case it is a 1986 Catalina 30 Tall Rig/Bow Sprit that looks to be in great shape. I took a look at it a few weeks ago when my wife and I went on a boat shopping trip to look at a number of boats between here and the Florida Gulf Coast (a great trip). The best we f...

Thanks for the detailed answer, Tim. I've been trying to find a mechanic that can give a Universal M25 a thorough looking over. I am a bit suspect of the motor and having a motor that runs well is important to me. Most of the mechanics I've talked to have been pretty uninterested in thoroughly check...

Book Recommendation: Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood
Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood by Rebecca Wittman. I picked this book up while browsing in Barnes & Nobles and I'm impressed. It is a brightwork how-to book, but the quality of the writing and the stunning photos will distract you from the fact that it really is about boat work. http://c...

there is a sailboat in our marina named 'Laden Swallow' and has a bird holding a coconut painted on the transom. That's nice. I wish I'd thought of that. Maybe I should go with a Python theme for the name of my next boat. what can I say ? I know I am in the minority here .. .. .. I may be joining y...

Surveying a Diesel Engine
Prior to having a mechanic survey a diesel engine, what steps can I take to determine if a diesel engine (in this case a Universal M25) is sound? I don't know much about diesel engines. Beyond checking that the filters look fairly new, the cables, hoses and clamps are in good shape and looking for f...

I think you should be able to get away with just thickened epoxy in the area around the pulpit. For the larger spots, I would recommend replacing with balsa. This is a sound construction method, so long as proper care is taken during the installation and the core is protected around fasteners and ha...

Geez, those were some gut-wrenching photos. I notice most (all?) of the pictured boats were on the hard (except maybe the two in the last photo?). How did boats in the water fare? I take it Mojito's okay? Oh, everything is fine. That boatyard is not close to the marinas. Do you ever get the feeling...

Ideally, no sealant at all. It depends on what you're removing. For example, I installed my coamings with no sealant in anticipation of removing them at least once a year to keep up the varnish. I've renewed the varnish since reinstalling the coamings and doing so on the boat is really pretty easy. ...

Tornado. This is getting ridiculous.
On the same day I sell the Triton, a tornado takes out Plus One, the boat I've been crewing on for a few years. Unbelievable. Last night, several tornadoes hit the New Orleans area. One went right through the boat yard where Plus One was having some work done. There's rig and keel damage and a jacks...

I was just thinking about Mojito this afternoon, and remembering that photo after Katrina - when we all thought she must surely have been wrecked. Panning past many less fortunate boats and then a blue bow and those distinctive main cabin ports... What a survivor :-) Amazing, isn't it? http://lh5.g...

I am not sure I understand the thought processes that are involved here. If maintaining a boat is too costly or too time consuming, or perhaps distasteful than why own a boat? In these cases it seems like even going down to check once in a while is too much of a bother. I completely agree. The inne...

I've been wondering what's been going on ever since you had your boat surveyed a couple weeks ago, but figured you'd post something when there was news, so I didn't bother you. It's actually a different buyer. The individual that paid for the survey backed out because of the soft foredeck and the n...

The grass growing on this boat is greener than my lawn.

Despite the fact that I have saloon style barn doors in my boat, the Triton is under contract as of yesterday evening. I'm going back and forth between excitement about the next step and near panic over selling a boat that I really enjoy. The new owner (assuming he does not get cold feet) has some e...

One minor thing: The page does not scroll down fully on the first few log entries for Brock's Good Goose article.

Mike does bring up a good point about the A4's early incarnations having no thermostat. My confidence was rapidly eroding when I was searching and searching for a thermostat and couldn't find one. I thought for sure that my short and troubled career as a marine mechanic was over. I was both relieve...

shut the valve at the tank and see if you still get the smell. If you don't you know it is down line from the tank. Great idea. The freshwater cooling kit below is just over $580. You know, at that price, I think I would just freshwater flush the engine every year and acid flush every couple of yea...

The Atomic 4 is a mechanically simple engine. I'm sure you can isolate and repair whatever is causing the fuel leak. I would put some paper towels under the tank to see if the tank is leaking. If it is, it will need to be removed and replaced. Also, check the connections in your fuel lines. Start at...

If the wood in the deteriorated area is solid, then I would be real hesitant to open up the whole rudder. You may want to drill some pilot holes to get a feel for the condition in other areas. If the condition is reasonable, then I would repair just the damaged section and perhaps glass over the edg...
