short version - run the engine.
I will. The haul out facility is 2.5 hours away. I figured we could motor most, if not all, of the way there. If there is an issue, it should manifest itself with a couple hours of use.

Thanks Bly. No, I won't be keeping the name. I don't like it for a few reasons. The new name will probably be Zydeco, but we haven't made that decision yet. I don't think I can maintain a cool detachment during the survey process if I name it first!

Thanks for the detailed answer, Tim. I've been trying to find a mechanic that can give a Universal M25 a thorough looking over. Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood by Rebecca Wittman. I picked this book up while browsing in Barnes & Nobles and I'm impressed. It is a brightwork how-to book, but the quality of the writing and the stunning photos will distract you from the fact that it really is about boat work. http://c...

Just use a utility knife to cut the scrim. Also, you are correct - the scrim side goes on the bottom.

When you install it, be sure you wet it out well with epoxy. That will mean getting it between the blocks as well.

Good luck with the project!

Surveying a Diesel Engine

Prior to having a mechanic survey a diesel engine, what steps can I take to determine if a diesel engine (in this case a Universal M25) is sound? I don't know much about diesel engines. Beyond checking that the filters look fairly new, the cables, hoses and clamps are in good shape and looking for f...

I think you should be able to get away with just thickened epoxy in the area around the pulpit. For the larger spots, I would recommend replacing with balsa. This is a sound construction method, so long as proper care is taken during the installation and the core is protected around fasteners and ha...

Clean and prep it as best you can and get yourself a gallon of Bilgekote. It's remarkable what fresh paint can do towards eliminating odors and keeping the boat clean. I know it's a pain, but I think it is likely worth the effort.

I've renewed the varnish since reinstalling the coamings and doing so on the boat is really pretty easy. ...
