Re: Forum future
This was probably the best forum on the web for rebuilding fiberglass boats for some time. I think it took a hit when Tim said he wouldn't be posting any longer. Perhaps there are other reasons too. For me personally, I just don't have the time to post as often, but I do check back from time to time...

Re: Monitoring Battery Temperature
For reference, this boat will be my world cruiser. I plan to be living on the boat for a good number of years. I also should have mentioned that I plan to use 4 GC2 Lead Acid batteries I've also posed the question to other online users. The general consensus seems to be that it would be nice, but it...

Monitoring Battery Temperature
Hello Everyone, I hope you're doing well and it's been awhile since I've posted, but I'm still plugging away on the project. I have a question for you all related to battery monitors: How important is it to have a monitor capable of monitoring battery temperature? According to my research (partially...

Calculating Forces on Anchor Rode
I am trying to determine the forces (in pounds) at work on an anchor rode. My specific questions are in bold , though the extra text may be useful for better understand the source of my questions. (Also sorry for the The strength of the anchor rode should be sized based on the rode's ability to resi...

Dinghy Plans
I am looking for suggestions for dinghy plans. I would like to build an excellent cruising dinghy. It must have the following characteristics: + Sails + Rows + Can be stowed in a deck area of about 4' (between the mast and doger, on the cabin-top). Likely meaning the dinghy must be nestable. + Buoya...

Extending Rudder Shaft
I am hoping to do away with the rudder stuffing box. My idea is to fiberglass in an extended rudder tube. The tube would run from the existing rudder shaft tube, to the underside of the cockpit and would be fully water-tight. I would like to make this modification, because it's the only reason I nee...

Re: Lead-Acid Battery Acid and Epoxy
I called West System epoxy today to find out if their epoxy would stand up to battery acid. I asked them to tell me both the real world applications and technical tests they performed on West System epoxy and sulfuric acid. Here was their technical support person's answers: Overall, it's resistance ...

Re: Lead-Acid Battery Acid and Epoxy
Why not phone the Gougeon's and ask? Their tech support section is always willing to answer questions like this. You're right, this is likely what I'll do tomorrow. I also wanted to ask here as well, because I appreciate a second pair of eyes on the entire set-up. Can you just use one of those clos...

Lead-Acid Battery Acid and Epoxy
Does anyone know the long term effects of battery acid dripping onto epoxy (which coats fiberglassed plywood & foam)? I may be using lead-acid batteries which means I must protect the battery compartment from acid spills. The lead-acid in batteries is 35% sulfuric-acid / 65% water (I believe). M...

Re: Depth of Waterlift Muffler - Any Fudge Room?
The solution I've come to (both from your and Beta's input) is to add a SS pipe extension to the already "high rise" exhaust. This will raise the exhaust mixing elbow to the required 9" above the muffler. I would have preferred to place the muffler in a lower location, but the limitat...

Depth of Waterlift Muffler - Any Fudge Room?
I am working on the exhaust system for my Beta 14 engine. There's a standard requirement for a waterlift muffler to drop 12" (or 9" in Beta Marine's instructions) from the outlet of the exhaust mixer elbow to the top of the water-lift muffler body. When planning the location of my water-li...

Re: Can fresh epoxy retard cure of interlux bilgecote?
I wanted to add some additional information to this thread for future reference. I called Interlux with a few questions about this very same situation. Here's what I asked, plus what they answered: Q: What do I need to know about applying Bilgekote over epoxy? A: Wash, water soap & stiff brush, ...

Watertight Through Bulkhead Engine Exhaust Line - Possible?
Problem: Passing an exhaust line through a bulkhead compromises bulkhead's water-tight integrity. Here's an image of the area: IMG_9914-426x284.jpg Background: I'm trying to build in water-tight bulkheads into my boat so if one area of the boat is holed, I can seal it off from the rest of the boat....

Re: Epoxy Mounting Hardware
When is launch date? :-) Dates! When I first started, dates were "real", but after learning that every project takes an undefinable amount of time until it's complete, I changed my tune. Now I just say "when the boat is done, it's done". That being said....I hope to finish the e...

Re: Epoxy Mounting Hardware
FWIW department...personally I think there is a lot to be said for simplicity and the "KISS" theory. Over-boring the holes in the deck, epoxy filling, tapping out, sealant, installing bolts with a SS or aluminum backing plate and nylocks goes a long way. I'm in agreement! After looking at...

Epoxy Mounting Hardware
I'm wondering about the feasibility of using epoxy to secure deck hardware. From speaking with a respected boat builder in my boat yard, he mentioned that the Gougon Brothers actually considered using epoxy to bed deck hardware as a viable option. That being said, I've never seen evidence of this me...

Re: Sizing Shackle for Chain Rode
I see! Now I realize that I should have researched the interior size of the chain. There are also other considerations, as Northstar mentioned, related to the anchor shank, but from my research I believe the anchor I plan to buy (a Rocna 10) will fit this size shackle. Thanks much for the clarificat...

Sizing Shackle for Chain Rode
I'm trying to decide which size anchor shackle will fit my planned anchor rode, but I'm having some trouble choosing an anchor shackle with a pin that will fit my anchor rode. Surely someone has solved this question before, so I'm reaching out for some input. As I understand it, the key for a shackl...

Wow, lot's of good input here. Thanks everyone. Thanks for your quick input Rachel. I've responded to a few of your comments below and I'll keep an eye out for the wise minds on this forum: One intuitive-type thought I had, while reading, is that continuous (full-length or nearly) stringers would strengthen "the boat" whereas maybe ones...

Adding Logitudinal Stringers
Hi Everyone, I'm steadily making progress on the full restoration of my Bristol 27, but before I fully build out the interior, I've been considering adding some fore-to-aft stringers in the boat. I may be using the term "stringer" wrong here, but in my mind, I consider a stringer as a forw...
