Re: Keel bolt replacement
The bolt heads are glassed over, so I wouldn’t expect a leak unless the glass has started to fail which doesn’t appear to be happening. The part that concerns me the most is that the keel is not nearly fair at the bow, and the gap is roughly equal to the mismatch between the fiberglass and the lead ...

Keel bolt replacement
After my boat was hauled out, the first time I've properly seen her out of the water, I discovered to my horror that the lead in the keel has separated from the hull by about 1/2" at the front. There is no comparable separation at the aft end but, after investigating further and discovering the...

Re: Moving my Galley - Interior Remodel
I've always used contact cement without an issue. That said, I haven't tried to cover a large surface (just a couple of small counter tops, 1 ft by 3 ft) Do you have one of those rollers for smoothing it?

Re: Moving my Galley - Interior Remodel
Hi Marvin-sadly no interior pics of the lockers or laz area. The access on Wanderers with an aft galley doesn't seem too bad. My current boat is that way as well and really the only problem is accessing the aft end of the engine, which I can still do somewhat easily through the cockpit lockers. I ju...

Re: Rhodes Swiftsure 33 SV Clio
Hi Kurt, yes they were all built with centerboards. This was the only production keel centerboarder Rhodes designed, although he drew many beautiful one-offs of similar concept. The construction of the centerboard mechanism on this boat is bulletproof, a huge improvement over my old Pearson Wanderer...

Re: Acquired a new project (Grampian Classic 31)
I was realizing that the boat needed way more work than I wanted to put into it for the kinds of things that I want to do in the future. Mostly she needed a lot of interior carpentry and repair. Plus I never really liked the layout so I was looking at changing it entirely to move the galley aft. I l...

Rhodes Swiftsure 33 SV Clio
After a false start with my last project I lucked into a good deal on a 1962 Rhodes Swiftsure 33. She is named Clio, hull number 96, and she was built by G. Devries Lentch in Amsterdam. These boats and a few others, including the first Rhodes Meridians, we imported by Seafarer Yachts before Seafarer...

Re: Acquired a new project (Grampian Classic 31)
Unfortunately I have to report that this project did not end well. As I dug further into the boat I discovered more and more issues. The blisters in particular were so severe that they went through multiple layers of fiberglass. The decks we totally shot. It looked increasingly likely that the engin...

My Wanderer has an Atomic 4 and I love that motor. I've yet to encounter a problem I couldn't easily fix myself. I saw you're planning on repainting your boat. I'll follow that with interest as I have to do the same to Stardust. The mast has a ~3" crack at the base from corrosion around the mas...

Not much going on right now. Waiting for this idiotically cold weather to break. I did manage to compression test the engine and diagnose some stuck valves. After freeing them, got 60-75-90-105 on the four cylinders which went up to 120-90-90-105 with some MMO added. Hopefully the rings will loosen ...

I'm at an all time low of two boats: Loon and her dinghy. I've been throwing around the idea of a skin on frame kayak build for this winter, but that will be the extent of my fleet for a long while. I did the two (big) boat thing and it was more stress than enjoyment.

You can order custom cut toppers for a little more from a variety of online stores. That might be a better solution just in terms of usability and aggravation. I plan to do the same thing on the Wanderer.

I am after some information on the make and model of a sailboat (SV Gratitude at the AYC for any Annapolis sailors) that I really like. Figment: I may have been mislead on the laminating. I was under the impression it would be stronger. That may not be the case. How does ash do with epoxy?

I have started work on upgrades and repairs for Loon this season, beginning with new spreaders. I sailed a Triton this past weekend with a tiller and was reminded yet again why I wanted the wheel gone. It just felt so much better. Then you'll be completely fine. I had a '57 Evinrude on my Sea Sprite 23 and it was the only outboard I've ever encountered that I liked. Put the outboard on a bracket. If you find, after a couple seasons, that you really do like the outboard then do the job properly and put it in a well. In my experience outboards on brackets on sailboats are a tremendous nuisance. If you have an outboard, you'd better not mind paying other people mo...

There may well be rudder stops, I will dig around under the cockpit and check. There also may well not be, with this boat it could go either way. A lot of things were done right, some were not. My Pearson Wanderer has, sadly, had her tiller replaced with a wheel. I think she was at some point used for charters, and at any rate it's a common modification for these boats.
