Organic Green Epoxys

Talk about favorite or hated suppliers, recommend good materials or sources, or anything of the same ilk. This is also a good place to suggest unique ideas and innovations you may have come up with.

Organic Green Epoxys

Post by Quetzalsailor »

I read recently, in Professional Boatbuilder, a blurb on two new epoxies for general use made from olive oil, goat cheese or something. Since I'm generally pretty jaundiced about such new things I wonder if any of the rest of us are better informed and more open minded? Like CFLs or water-based finishes, surely this stuff has a downside; what is it?

Sounds like the biggest downside is a need to eat greek for lunch after using it... Grin!

I too would like to hear more about this. The hazards of epoxy still scare me a bit when it comes to the bisphenol-a, and amine sensitivity.

There are (or were) water bases epoxies. A friend built a Benford dory using some a while back but I don't know the manufacturer.

Page 6 of Professional Boatbuilder, number 124, April/May 2010, features an interesting letter refuting the claims put forth by the manufacturer of one the epoxy products mentioned in the first post of this thread, "EcoPoxy".

I will leave it to the reader to draw their own conclusions regarding the content of the letter and its response.

Unfortunately, this page doesn't seem to be available online at this time, and I don't think I should reproduce the page on my own. If the page becomes available online later, I'll try to remember to post it here.

Yes, thanks for posting the letters. I thought both the concern and the response were well-reasoned. I'd like to see Practical Sailor or someone else conduct a test for strength and endurance. Just how hard can you make tofu?
