Looking for a new bronze prop shaft in the NW.

Post by Idon84 »

Does anyone have shop recommendations for a shaft replacement here in the NW? I would prefer bronze if possible.

Thanks,

... Why do you want to use bronze, when the standard in the industry pretty much appears to be SS??? ... Just curious ...

I just ordered bronze rods for my tiller from www.onlinemetals.com they have a very good selection and it was not that expensive.

I have a 20" long bronze log so I would like to keep it all similar if at all possible. SS is not out, I'm just looking at options.

I've used online metals so I guess it's just a matter of getting the machining done with some rod. Now where to get the machining done?

... I would've thought there would be a veritable choice of shops in Olympia but, maybe not. ... Certainly there should be quite a few in Seattle and, failing that, definitely in Port Townsend, the boat building capital of WA state.

... The Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival is on Sept 10, 11 & 12th. Perhaps you should go visit and talk to other boat builders there to see who they use. It's amazing what you can learn at a show like that. I shall be making my annual visit on Friday, Sept 10th. ... I like going on Friday because kids are in school and one can wander around the docks without having to beware of kids under your feet ... ha ha, you can tell I'm an "old" fart by that comment. It's definitely quieter and more comfortable on Friday compared to the rest of the weekend. I don't care for huge crowds either.

Thanks all.

I went to the boat festival a few years back and was a lot of fun.

I will give Todd at Cape George Cutter's a call to see what he thinks. I guess I was just hoping someone from Plastic Classics had some recommendations. I trust info here WAY more than anywhere else.

Dan's idea about getting the silicon bronze rod from Online Metals is a good idea. I can just take that to a good machine shop with my old shaft and have them fix it up for me.

Thanks again.
